Capital Campaigns
Like all independent schools, Waynflete periodically embarks on a multiyear capital fundraising campaign. Campaigns generate a capital sum rather than revenue for the school, typically for facilities and endowment growth.
Capital campaigns are transformative, advancing goals set in the Board of Trustees’ strategic plan—the culmination of a thorough examination of the school’s strengths, accomplishments, challenges, and resources. Recent capital campaigns reflect the careful stewardship and vision of Waynflete leadership and the generosity of its community.

Endowments
The Waynflete Endowment provides a steady source of income that reduces our reliance on tuition, helps ensure financial stability, and advances our mission for many years to come. Endowment income contributes to annual expenses, either for the general operating budget (including financial aid and faculty enrichment) or for donor-designated programs.
Many of Waynflete’s named endowments receive ongoing support from our community. We remain grateful to those generous donors who have recognized the importance of a robust endowment in strengthening our future.

Endowments Supporting Financial Aid
Financial Aid Challenge Endowment & Class of 2008 Gifts
Established in 1998, The Financial Aid Challenge Endowment provides financial aid to families over and above that which is supported by the annual operating budget. This fund was started at the beginning of the Campaign for Waynflete when the School accepted the matching gift of $250,000 from on anonymous donor with the restriction that funds generated by the endowment be used only to supplement financial aid otherwise available at Waynflete. The Class of 2008 added to this endowment as their graduation gift.
Class of 2006 Graduation Gift Endowment for Financial Aid
Established in 2006, the Class of 2006 Graduation Gift Endowment for Financial Aid funds financial aid over and above that which is supported by the annual operating budget.
Cinda Bailey Joyce Endowment: A Financial Aid Fund to Enhance Lower School Diversity
Established in 2010, the Cinda Bailey Joyce Endowment: A Financial Aid Fund to Enhance Lower School Diversity provides support for students from all economic backgrounds whose families seek for them the opportunity to participate in the extraordinary early childhood and elementary programs that Cinda and her colleagues developed over twenty years. Cinda Joyce was a teacher and team leader at Waynflete and then Lower School Director for fifteen years. She retired in June 2010.
The Mark W. Segar Endowment for Financial Aid
Established in 2013, The Mark W. Segar Endowment for Financial Aid was established to honor the work of Mark W. Segar, Waynflete School’s Head of School from 1994 to 2013. The Mark W. Segar Endowment will contribute additional funds each year to Waynflete’s financial aid program. Per the Board of Trustees spending policy, a percent of the funds raised will be added annually to Waynflete’s financial aid budget. Contributions to this fund will be restricted, in perpetuity, for the purpose of providing financial aid towards the cost of tuition for students selected through the Admission process.
Financial Aid Campaign Endowment
Established in 2015 at the start of the Building on Our Strengths Capital Campaign, the Financial Aid Campaign Endowment supports the Waynflete operating budget and helps to fund the school’s financial aid commitments.
The Patricia Davis Klingenstein ’47 Fund for Financial Aid
Established in 2015, The Patricia Davis Klingenstein ’47 Fund for Financial Aid provides financial aid for families over and above the Waynflete annual operating budget.
The Peter Hamblin Endowment for Financial Aid
Established in 2018, The Peter Hamblin Endowment for Financial Aid was created to honor the work of Peter Hamblin, Waynflete’s Associate Head of School, who retired in June 2018 after a 34-year career at the school.The Peter Hamblin Endowment for Financial Aid will support financial aid for families over and above the annual operating budget.
The Malone Family Foundation Endowment
Established in 2011, The Malone Family Foundation Endowment provides financial aid over and above the Waynflete annual operating budget.
The Cathie Connors Fund for Financial Aid
As an expression of gratitude and deep appreciation to Cathie Connors and the entire Waynflete community for the experiences of both Sofia Canning ’14 and Isabel Canning ’17, the Garcia – Canning Foundation established The Cathie Connors Fund for Financail Aid in 2017. The Cathie Connors Fund for Financial Aid shall provide financial aid within the Waynflete operating budget for students of all ages who would not otherwise be in a position to attend Waynflete.
Louise Dodge Stoddard Fund for the Study of Foreign Languages and Culture
Established in 1988, The Louise Dodge Stoddard Fund for the Study of Foreign Languages and Culture offers stipends to students who wish to attend structured overseas language/home stay programs over the summer. The Fund was established in memory of Louise Dodge Stoddard, Foreign Language Department Chair from 1980-1984, to enhance students’ experiences with foreign language and culture.
Zo King Endowed Scholarship Fund for the Arts
Established in 1996, the Zo King Endowed Scholarship Fund for the Arts provides funds for student scholarships in the area of the arts. This fund was set up by the Parents Committee on the Arts as part of the Waynflete Parents Association, in honor of Zona King, former arts faculty.
Endowment for Minority Students and Faculty
Established in 1998, the Endowment for Minority Students and Faculty provides scholarships for minority students and/or towards salaries and benefits for minority faculty.
Student Foreign Travel Endowment
Established in 1999, the Student Foreign Travel Endowment helps provide access to Waynflete students to make foreign travel trips arranged by various departments of the school.
The Debba Curtis Fund for Students in Need
Established in 2017, The Debba Curtis Fund for Students in Need provides financial assistance over and above the operating budget to Waynflete students, of all ages, who are receiving substantial financial aid awards, and for whom extra financial assistance is necessary. Such assistance will take the form of school supplies, café meals, transportation, college visits, academic support, athletic equipment, and any other school activities as necessary for student’s full participation in the Waynflete program.
Class of 2005 Endowment for Non-Tuition Related Student Services
Established in 2005, The Class of 2005 Endowment for Non-Tuition Related Student Services helps enable students with financial need to participate in the full range of activities by providing support for items not covered by tuition including but not limited to academic support, musical instruments, and athletic equipment.

Endowments Supporting Faculty and Staff
Payson Trust Endowment Award for Faculty
Established in 1988, the Payson Trust Endowment Award for Faculty provides grants to faculty for further education, travel, research, or combinations of these areas of faculty enrichment. This Fund was started by a gift from the Margaret Payson Trust for her appreciation of the educational contributions that Waynflete has made to members of her family and the community.
E. E. Ford Foundation Challenge for Faculty Development
Established in 1993, the E. E. Ford Foundation Challenge for Faculty Development provides professional development opportunities for faculty in the upper school (grades 9-12) to encourage and support innovative curricular initiatives from upper school faculty.
Ruth Bailey Blinn Davis Endowed Fund
Established in 1996, the Ruth Bailey Blinn Davis Endowed Fund provides an annual stipend award in recognition of a deserving teacher. Ruth Bailey Blinn Davis was a teacher at Waynflete from 1942 to 1944 and 1947 to 1970. During most of these years she was a second grade teacher and she also served as Head of School. The Fund was established by her husband, Euan Davis.
Exemplary Teaching Award Endowed Fund
Established in 1998, the Exemplary Teaching Award Endowed Fund was created to provide an annual stipend to be used by a faculty member for a professional development activity of his or her choosing with approval by the Head of School.
Pam Paul Endowment for Professional Development
Established in 2003, The Pam Paul Endowment for Professional Development supports Waynflete faculty and staff to enhance their skills and bring new ideas to the School. Pam Paul, former Dean of Students, had a particular interest in health and wellness, and the hope in forming this fund was that by providing additional educational opportunities for professional growth and personal renewal, the endowment would promote wellness throughout the entire Waynflete community. This fund was established by the seniors and families of the Class of 2003 and was increased by the Class of 2004 graduation gift.
Class of 2009 Graduation Gift Endowment for Professional Development
Established in 2009, the Class of 2009 Graduation Gift Endowment for Professional Development provides funds for faculty development above and beyond that which is supported by the annual operating budget. The priority of the Class of 2009’s appreciation statement is as follows: For the Class of 2009, the faculty are the most important aspect of their experience at Waynflete. It is their availability, accessibility, caring and willingness to help that is most appreciated by the students.
The Tim Soley and Maria Gallace Fund for Professional Development
Established in 2018, The Tim Soley and Maria Gallace Fund for Professional Development supports professional development endeavors for faculty and staff at Waynflete that fall above the operating budget.
Endowment For Teaching
Established in 1997, the Endowment for Teaching supports professional development opportunities for Waynflete faculty and staff.
The Waynflete Faculty and Staff Endowment
In June 2012, a Waynflete family gave a gift to the school to establish a new endowment fund to be named “The Waynflete Faculty and Staff Endowment”. The gift has been given to honor the substantial contributions of past and present faculty and staff to the Waynflete community. The endowment proceeds will be used to support annual compensation costs.
Endowments Supporting Programs
The Karen Whitney Fund for Modern U.S. History, Government and Current Affairs
Established in 2002, The Karen Whitney Fund for Modern U.S. History, Government, and Current Affairs supports faculty efforts to strengthen understanding of American politics and current affairs. Funds may be used for student programming and/or faculty professional development activities, both to enrich teacher and/or student knowledge and awareness, and to provide a strong base for classroom activities that address issues of civic participation, political history, and American government. The fund is named for Karen Whitney, former History faculty member, who taught at Waynflete from 1984-2002.
Margaret W. Soule Class of 1959 Endowment for the Archives
Established in 2009, the Margaret W. Soule Class of 1959 Endowment for the Archives provides funds to maintain the Archives Department at Waynflete. This endowment was started by the Class of 1959 after their 50th reunion to honor the work of their classmate, Margaret Soule ’59. Maggie worked as a volunteer staff person for decades protecting the history of the School and providing research for the community. The Class of 1960 added to the endowment for their 50th reunion. Maggie passed away in November 2010.
The Josephine H. Detmer ’47 Endowment Fund for History
Established in 2015, The Josephine Hildreth Detmer ’47 Endowment Fund for History was established by Zareen Taj Mirza ’75 in honor of her mother, Josephine Hildreth Detmer ’47, who taught History at Waynflete for 28 years. The Fund is intended to provide financial support for the Waynflete History Department.
The Torrey Family Fund
Established in 2016, The Torrey Family Fund shall support Middle and Upper School faculty development in the humanities (History, English, Arts, and Languages) above and beyond the Waynflete operating budget.
The Cathie Connors Fund for Athletics
Established in 2017, as an expression of gratitude and deep appreciation to Cathie Connors and the entire Waynflete community for the experiences of both Sofia Canning ’14 and Isabel Canning ’17, the Garcia – Canning Foundation established The Cathie Connors Fund for Athletics. The Cathie Connors Fund for Athletics is intended to support professional development opportunities for Middle School and Upper School Waynflete coaches and/or any athletic program expense for students whose families are unable to afford such expenses (such as travel, athletic equipment, team events and activities).
The Victoria Hilliard Donovan Fund for Early Childhood Education
Established in 2017, The Victoria Hilliard Donovan Fund for Early Childhood Education provides programmatic support for Waynflete’s Early Childhood Program.
The Miss Zareen Taj Mirza ’75 Endowment Fund
Established in 2018, The Miss Zareen Taj Mirza ’75 Endowment Fund shall support the Waynflete School operating budget in any of the following areas: students or programs in grades 5-10 with a special preference for Latin, Biology, or Field Hockey.
The Fund for Global Understanding
Established in 1989, The Fund for Global Understanding provides program resources to encourage Waynflete students to develop their understanding and appreciation of the rich diversity of the global community.
Lowell Libby Endowment for Developing Youth Leaders
Established in 2021, The Lowell Libby Endowment for Developing Youth Leaders was established to honor the work of Lowell W. Libby, Waynflete’s long-serving Director of the Upper School, who retired in June 2021 after 30-years at the school. The Endowment shall provide funds to support civics education and dialogue at Waynflete. Contributions to this Fund shall be used for existing and future programs that foster civic engagement and help create better listeners, communicators, and engaged leaders. Make a gift now
Endowment for Academic Support
Established in 1999, the Endowment for Academic Support provides funding for academic support for students with learning challenges. This fund was established by the Phineas W. Sprague Memorial Foundation.
Endowment for the Arts
Established in 1998, the Endowment for the Arts was created to provide support for Waynflete’s arts program.
The Patricia Davis Klingenstein Class of 1947 Endowment for the Waynflete Library
Established in 2004, The Patricia Davis Klingenstein Class of 1947 Endowment for the Waynflete Library provides funds that support the Waynflete libraries. This fund was established by Patricia and John Klingenstein and other members of their family in honor of Mrs. Klingenstein’s 75th birthday and in support of Waynflete’s libraries.
Class of 2012 Endowment in Support of Upper School Activities
Established in 2012, The Class of 2012 Endowment for Upper School Activities provides support for Upper School activities such as the Outdoor Experience program.
Endowments Supporting General Operations and Wellness
The Lydia Maier Endowment for Social and Emotional Wellness
The Lydia Maier Endowment has been established in grateful recognition of Lydia Maier, Dean of Students at Waynflete School. This endowed fund is intended to provide ongoing support, at the discretion of the Head of School in concert with the Dean of Students, to the professionals and programs that promote the emotional and social wellness of Waynflete Upper School students. It is the desire of the Spagnola family that this funding support programs that help students to cultivate a strong sense of self, to develop coping skills to manage challenges and disappointments, to find value and purpose in life, and to connect with others.
The Fund for Mental Health and Wellness Education in memory of Payton Sullivan
Established in 2017, The Fund for Mental Health and Wellness Education in memory of Payton Sullivan is designed to fund educational initiatives that support Waynflete students’ mental health and/or other wellness programs as deemed appropriate by the Head of School.
Class of 2002 Endowment for Health Services
Established in 2002, the Class of 2002 Endowment for Health Services was created to support health services at Waynflete, including the services of a health professional and to provide educational programs about health and wellness.
